FAQs about getting the COVID-19 vaccine with Teladoc Health

What has changed?

Based on CDC guidance, some pharmacists may ask for a prescription before giving you the vaccine. This means that for some pharmacies, it may not be possible to walk in and receive a shot without a prescription from a doctor. To find out if your pharmacy requires a prescription for the vaccine, contact your pharmacy directly.

How can Teladoc Health help you get a prescription for the COVID-19 vaccine?

You can now use Teladoc Health’s 24/7 Care service to receive a prescription for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Who can get a prescription? 

People who meet the following criteria can get a COVID-19 vaccine prescription:

  • Aged 65 or older

  • Considered high risk for severe disease due to underlying health condition(s) 

  • Want to lower their risk of long COVID, or

  • Want to lower the risk of passing COVID to another household member or close contact

Who is considered “high risk” for severe illness from COVID-19?

According to the CDC, people are considered high risk if they have:

  • Cancer

  • Chronic kidney, liver, or lung disease 

  • Diabetes

  • Disabilities

  • Heart conditions

  • Blood disorders 

  • Weakened immune systems from any cause

  • Mental health conditions

  • Obesity or are overweight

  • Pregnancy 

  • A history of smoking or substance use

What happens if the pharmacy does not fill the prescription? 

If your pharmacist will not fill your prescription, you may have to find another pharmacy. Teladoc Health providers cannot reach out to pharmacies directly. To avoid this situation, call your pharmacy before getting your vaccine prescription to find out if they will accept it.
