Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) FAQs

How do I use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) as part of the Diabetes Management program?

Using your CGM as part of the Teladoc Health Diabetes Management program helps eligible members track their glucose and build healthier habits. When you connect your CGM device to the Teladoc Health app, you will get easy-to-understand charts, summaries and insights. You can also work one-on-one with a coach if you’d like extra support.

Who is eligible?

You can use your CGM with the Teladoc Health app if you:

  • Have type 1 or type 2 diabetes,

  • Are part of the Teladoc Health Diabetes Management program, and

  • Use a CGM that’s supported by the program.

Some people may get a CGM through their job or health plan. It depends on what your job or health plan offers. If you are not sure, you can ask your benefits team or contact us to find out.

What CGM devices are supported?

Teladoc Health currently supports:

  • Dexcom G7, G6

Can I really use my CGM with the Teladoc Health app at no additional cost to me?

What is an insight?

Insights provide information and tips based on your CGM retrospective glucose data. Insights appear at the top of the glucose data page on the daily, seven-day and 14-day views. They help you understand how things like food, activity or stress affect your glucose—and what actions may help.

When will I start getting insights?

If you are wearing a CGM for the first time or there’s been a gap in your data, it may take three to 24 hours for your first insight to appear in the app.

If you have been wearing your CGM before connecting it to the Teladoc Health app, up to 180 days of past data will be imported. You will begin seeing insights right away.

What data should I expect to see in the Teladoc Health app from my CGM?

The Teladoc Health app will show you key information from your CGM, including:

  • Time in range (TIR): how often your glucose was in your target range. More time in range means better health outcomes over time.

  • Time below range (TBR): how often your glucose was too low (below range)

  • Time above range (TAR): how often your glucose was too high (above range)

  • Average glucose

  • Glucose management index (GMI): an estimate of your A1c based on your last 14 days

Charts show your trends over 24-hour, seven-day and 14-day periods.

Will I be able to see real-time CGM data in the Teladoc Health app?

No. The CGM data shown in the Teladoc Health app is delayed by at least one hour, based on how it’s shared from the third-party vendor. Always refer to your CGM’s original app for real-time decisions, such as taking insulin or treating low glucose levels. The Teladoc Health app will always tell you when your data was last synced.

Why are CGM and BGM readings different?

CGMs and BGMs measure glucose in different places.

  • A CGM checks sugar in the fluid just under your skin.

  • A BGM checks sugar in your blood with a fingerstick.

Because they measure in different areas of the body, the numbers may not always match. Readings from a CGM may lag by up to 15-20 minutes. This is especially true after eating or moving. Both tools are helpful, but small differences are normal.

How do I connect my CGM to the Teladoc Health app?

To connect your CGM, select your device type in the Teladoc Health app and sign in with your Dexcom account.

Once you’re signed in, you’ll see confirmation that your device is connected, and your data will sync automatically— no need to upload anything manually.

How do I know if my CGM is connected?

The app will show “Connected” once syncing is complete.

If you were previously connected to your CGM’s app, up to 180 days of historical data will automatically sync, allowing you to view your data and insights right away.

If you have not been connected to your CGM app previously, it may take at least an hour for your data to appear.

Can I see my CGM data on the web too?

No. Right now, CGM data is only available in the mobile app. Download the app here.

Who else can view my data?

You are the only one who can view your retrospective CGM data. However, if you schedule a coaching session, your coach will be able to view your data to support your goals. We use the highest standards of privacy and security. You can trust we keep your data safe. Learn more in our privacy policy.

Will my Teladoc Health care provider have access to my data?

No. Your Teladoc Health care provider can’t see your retrospective CGM data unless you choose to share it.

Should I use my BGM and CGM together?

Yes! Using both can be helpful, especially when you are getting used to your CGM. Here’s how to use them together:

  • If the number on the CGM doesn’t match how you feel, use your BGM to confirm.

  • Because CGM readings can have a lag, use your BGM during times when you might experience changes, like after meals or exercise.

What happens when I change my sensor?

When you change your sensor, there is no need to reconnect your device or reset your account.

What if I have trouble syncing my CGM to the Teladoc Health app?

Try these troubleshooting resources to see if they resolve your issue.

What should I do if my readings seem off?

If something feels off, check your blood sugar with your BGM. If the meter reading matches how you feel, trust it. If needed, calibrate your CGM with your meter or contact your CGM device’s manufacturer.

What if the CGM sensor isn’t working or needs a replacement?

If you have issues with your CGM sensor, contact your CGM manufacturer here
