The real heroes of holiday gatherings are the sides, and this cheesy gratin doesn't disappoint. This dish has warm spices, decadent layers and soft rutabaga and squash.

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 
  2. Spray a small casserole dish, or 9” x 13” baking dish, with cooking spray. 
  3. In a large measuring cup, combine evaporated milk, low-fat milk, garlic, nutmeg, salt and pepper. 
  4. Layer squash, rutabaga and onion slices in prepared pan, alternating them as you go. Pour milk mixture evenly over the vegetables. 
  5. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes, or until vegetables are easily pierced with a fork. Remove the foil, sprinkle with cheese and continue cooking for another 15 - 20 minutes, until cheese is golden and crispy.
