Even if your employer or plan sponsor offers GLP-1s as a program benefit, you may not meet certain clinical criteria. During your care visit, your care provider will determine if a GLP-1 medication is right for you using the following eligibility criteria:
If you have obesity (BMI of at least 30)
If you’re overweight (BMI of at least 27) and you also have a weight-related health issue like high blood pressure or sleep apnea
There is limited data on the effectiveness and safety of these medications in people with a BMI below 27. Plus, GLP-1s carry the risk of side effects like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Weight loss can also occur at a rate that poses even more risks. So, the potential benefits of weight loss may not outweigh the risks.
